This whole American life can be overwhelming when you begin to step back and consider the smallest details and then begin to see how vast their impact is in life and culture and framework of belief. this website has been helpful in considering some of these things more carefully: http://www.simpleliving.net/main/
It is all a process and part of the journey and I am far from getting a handle on it, but beginning the journey seems to be a start. Also this book, originally a PBS special has provided an environment of new thought and self reflection for me:

you know, it's funny that the simple living website is not, well, simpler. to me it seems that the design should be streamlined and the main concepts more clearly emphasized. i found this irony to be a bit striking.
there's a book that luke was telling me about awhile back that pointed out just how successful this sort of simplicity can be-- think google or ipod. the image from the book juxtaposes the simplicity of a one-button ipod to the gratuitous complexity of, say, a television remote.
interestingly, i think that this book is concerned primarily with church leadership. you should ask luke about it-- i bet you'd dig it.
